Mark Twain once wrote, “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” One of the keys to spiritual growth is often a stumbling block for many: forgiveness. It’s not that we don’t want to forgive, it’s that we have many misconceptions about what it means to forgive.

Forgiveness is not condoning, nor is it forgetting. Forgiveness is not about the person who hurt us; it’s about us. It’s something we do for our own freedom. Often, the most difficult person to forgive is ourselves. When we understand how and why we forgive, it becomes much easier to practice.

In this month’s IONS meeting, we’ll discuss what forgiveness is not…and what it is. We’ll also try out some techniques taken from Byron Katie (“The Work”) and Colin Tipping (“Radical Forgiveness”).
