“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasures you seek.” — Joseph Campbell
Sub-conscious and semi-conscious fears act in the background to suppress us from trying for things we want, or drive us to unhealthy even very self destructive behaviors. Shame, guilt, even just uncertainty stop us from even looking deeper, leaving us at the mercy of these unspoken, unseen, unacknowledged drivers of our lives.
Shadow work is about learning to not only look at the inner demons, but to understand them, and handle them, instead of being manhandled by them. It is not for the faint of heart, often past traumas emerge as root causes, unleashing some pretty vulnerable feelings, anger, regret, and shame, but also unlocking the mystery of why, which has the keys to dismantle the automatic response and allow you to grow beyond those instinctive responses.
Archetypes, PTSD, sibling and family relationships, our evolutionary brain, all play a part in these “go to” responses that no longer serve our needs, let alone our creative desires. Yet we are prisoners only while we look away, as the chains are of our own making, and we have many options when we just face them.
