“The most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical.  It is the power of all true science.”  – Albert Einstein

Mystical experience is not limited to religious leaders and saints.  No deeply spiritual person is without a touch of mysticism.   Following a deep mystical experience, a profound shift occurs.  A dimension has opened that at first seems incongruent with the world as we have known it – and as our culture, upbringing and society proclaim it to be.  We are caught between two worlds, two apparently contradictory versions of reality – one defined by an inner, subjective experience; the other being the consensus reality of the “outside world.”  If we attempt to deny the mystical reality, suddenly the world we’ve known and cherished up until the experience feels, in the words of Hamlet, “flat, stale and unprofitable,” and we begin to lose energy.  On the other hand, denying the so-called “objective reality” and its values leaves us feeling isolated and lonely.  Is there a way of reconciling the two?  Do we attempt to somehow straddle the two, with a foot in each world, in a permanent state of imbalance?

In our March meeting, we will discuss the elements and consequences of this profoundly transformative experience.

What is IONS? The Institute of Noetic Sciences™ founded in 1973 by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research, education, and membership organization whose mission is supporting individual and collective transformation through consciousness research, educational outreach, and engaging a global learning community in the realization of our human potential. “Noetic” comes from the Greek word nous, which means “intuitive mind” or “inner knowing.” IONS™ conducts, sponsors, and collaborates on leading-edge research into the potentials and powers of consciousness, exploring phenomena that do not necessarily fit conventional scientific models while maintaining a commitment to scientific rigor.

The Caritas Center sponsors one of a global network of self-organizing community groups that study and discuss the work of IONS.
