Featuring Eliana And Chris Salter

FREE MEETUP

The Pusher is a classic inner critic, often “invented” to drive a person to “succeed” at something a parent or peers value. It usually develops to help us do well at school. The Pusher’s job is to get us to achieve, to meet goals, to keep moving forward in life. It helps us to get ahead in the world. The problem is, this Pusher, once the inner critic hijacks it, is never satisfied.

The Critic works with the Pusher to get us to move, move, move! At any sign that we are getting too lazy, that we might possibly fall behind, that we might be less than the next person, the Critic will point out our failing to us and the Pusher will start to push. The Critic’s cry, when it is teamed up with the Pusher, is: “You are just not making it. Everyone is out there ahead of you.”One or both of our parents often seem to use the “carrot” of “conditional love”, in other words, “do good in school, athletics, work, etc. and I will love you, or at least give you a drop of attention more than your siblings.” Kids learn very young how to compete for social and family recognition, but when the inner critic hijacks the pusher, it then becomes an empty competitive achievement gerbil wheel.

Learn how to recognize this inner critic, its source, and bring it back on the side of protecting you rather than crippling you.
(Fourth in a series of 4 sessions on the inner critic.)
